The following events are highlights of this season at Bonnechere Park. Plan to join us and be sure to tell your friends. Keep in mind you will require a Valid Daily Permit or Camping Permit to participate in most of these activities. Check back for additional info or call 613-757-2103.

Park Opens!

May 25 to June 23: School Programs
School groups are invited to prebook curriculum-based natural and cultural heritage education programs. Themes include Footprints in Time (FIT), Archaeology, Pioneers, Turtles, Birds and much more!

June 10 to 12: Friends' Weekend
TBA: FBP Annual General Meeting at the Davenport Centre.

July 1, Friday: Canada's Day
Celebrate Canada Day by stepping back into our past. The morning programs will feature a guided walk from the Davenport Centre to The Depot with a focus on what life was like for the Little Bonnechere pioneers a century ago.
Fireworks are illegal within provincial parks, but the village of Killaloe is known for its rousing presentation of music, light and colour -- so be sure to take it in.

July 6: Artist in the Park
1pm to 3pm
Local artist, Kim Hanewich, will offer free drawing instructions to park visitors. Participants must be 13 year of age to adult and all skill levels are welcome. Materials will be provided. In these 2-hour drawing classes we will explore techniques used in onsite work. Kim has mounted a series of her Bonnechere paintings at The Algonquin Trading Post in nearby Deacon. Be sure to drop in and check them out.

July 19 to 23: Sands of Time Festival
Bonnechere's annual Sands of Time Festival celebrates the Bonnechere River and its role in local history as well as importance as a natural environment that serves as a home for a wide variety of wildlife.

July 19: Save Ontario's Turtles
10am to Noon
Learn about the diversity of turtles in Ontario and what you can do to help preserve their populations. We will head on a hike along the river to see if we can spot any turtles basking along the shore.

July 20: Canoe Hike on the Bonnechere
10am to Noon
Join park staff for a trip up the Bonnechere to learn about the history and ecology of the river. Travelling by canoe is not only a traditional form of travel on the river, but also an excellent way to spot wildlife along the shore. Canoes are not provided, participants make bring their own or rent one from the park store. Please visit the Davenport Center to pre-register for this program.

July 23: Annual Sand Sculpting Competition
10am to Noon
Come and try your hand at creating a sand sculpture on Bonnechere's beautiful beach. Teams can sign up at the Davenport Center and learn the theme for this year's competition.

July 30: Spirits' Night
8:00 - 9:00
Once a year, when the stars reach a particular alignment, those who once lived and worked along the Bonnechere River can be seen travelling the shores once again. You will meet voyageurs and surveyors, lumberjacks and pioneers who called the Bonnechere Valley home long before Ontario's first provincial parks.

August 3: Artist in the Park

August 6: Passport to the Past
10am to 2pm
Come and see local artisans and craftspeople practicing traditional skills like blacksmithing, rope making, fish decoy carving and hand-built clay pottery. This is an excellent opportunity to meet the artisans and learn about their trades.

August 9: Bike Rodeo
10am to 12pm
Members from the local OPP detachment will be at Bonnechere to teach young park visitors the rules of the road and how to safely ride their bicycles. There will be an obsticle course where riders can hone their bike handling skills and a bicycle tour around the campground.

August 10: Artist in the Park

Reverend Ken Ramsden uses music to weave historic tales of times past, taking the audience on a journey back through time. Join us at the Davenport Center for a live performance; bring a chair as seating is limited.

August 11: Music by The Trophy Husbands
7pm to 9pm
Join us in welcoming back The Trophy Husbands, whose classic rock and folk music sets the stage for a great musical evening. Performing at the Davenport Center; bring a chair as seating is limited.

August 11: Footprints in Time Hike
10am to 12pm
Experience 12 000 years of time travel along the Little Bonnechere River on a interpreted hike of the new Footprints in Time trail. Learn more about the natural and cultural heritage of the region steeped in First Nation teachings and traditions. Interactive activities for children and youth; fun for the entire family!

August 13: Wolf Howl
7pm to 10:30pm
Join author and naturalist Michael Runtz for an excellent slideshow about wolves before heading up to Basin Depot in Algonquin Park where we will attempt to get a response from a wild wolf packs.

August 20: Archaeology Day
10am to 1pm
Join us for a mock archaeology excavation where children play the role of an archaeologist. There is also a coil pot building station where participants are guided through the process and end up with a pot of their own to take home. Watch low-tech fire starting demonstrations at several points throughout the morning. Members of the Ottawa Chapter of the Ontario Archaeological Society will be on hand to discuss and explain local archaeology and history.

August 20: First Peoples of the Bonnechere & Algonquin Area
7pm to 9pm
Bonnechere is proud to be hosting guest interpreter Ethan Huner, from Algonquin Provincial Park. Join us for this special presentation that explores the history of the first peoples to live within Algonquin and along the Bonnechere River many thousands of years before Europeans landed in North America. Ethan has participated in archaeological expeditions in Algonquin Park, looking for artifacts that help us better understand what life was like for local first peoples and how they lived on this very landscape.
